What is wandering?
It's using your intuition to move through territory. A fundamentally human practice, it's at the heart of our success as a species, and benefits our brains, bodies, and society.
What's the difference between a tour and wandering?
A 'tour' is a structured, scripted experience that can be repeated again and again, regardless of the participants.
A wander is a one-of-a-kind, unscripted adventure that develops organically as a result of the alchemical reaction between the guide(s), group, and territory.
Who benefits from wandering?
Because wandering is at the heart of what makes us human, we all benefit from wandering. It helps us change our thoughts, emotional realities, and understanding of the world, helping us gather new perspectives and live on a bigger map.
Who is WandeRing NYC for?
Wandering is for everybody. WandeRing NYC is for New Yorkers and visitors who want to see the city and/or their lives and work with fresh eyes.
Is wandering safe?
Anything can happen anywhere. Double true in New York. But NYC is largely a safe and friendly place, and we avoid danger spots so that we can focus on having an experience that is engaging and fun.
Is food included in the cost of 'tours'? Can we substitute?
Yes, food is generally included in tour costs. Drinks are not included.
We usually visit 4-5 quality spots during a typical 3-hour wander. To keep things simple, the guide usually orders the same thing for everyone. While we aim to accommodate dietary preferences, substitutions are not always possible. Additional purchases are at your discretion.
How big are the groups?
Group size is usually capped at 10 or less.
If you have a larger group looking for a private wander, send me a note.
What's your position on Slumming?
NYC has a long history of well-to-do people being guided into poor neighborhoods for the cheap thrill of looking in on other people's misery. This activity has long been known as slumming.
Slumming was and is a horrific act of tourism and I work hard to avoid bringing outsiders to places where our presence would feel intrusive or exploitative.
Please do not go slumming in New York, or anywhere else. If you're not there to learn and listen, don't go.
Are these tours accessible for people with mobility issues?
Wandering is an inclusive activity. Everyone is free to participate. We move according to the ability of the slowest member of the group. If you want to discuss accommodations, please send me a message, I'm happy to talk.
Is wandering good for children?
We welcome smart, curious kids of all ages, but know that we might touch on adult topics, see accidentally adult things on the street, and use adult language, and sometimes stand around and talk about stuff that might be boring for kids.
Will there be restrooms?
Yes. Finding restrooms in New York is part of the fun. And we know lots of them.
Who'll lead the wander?
The tour will be led by me, Dan Flag. I'm a licensed NYC guide with 25+ years of wandering and guiding experience in a variety of contexts.
Should New York tour guides be tipped?
Tipping 10%-20% of the ticket price to the guide at the end of an outstanding tour is common practice in NYC, but tipping isn't required.
What to wear and bring?
Dress sensibly and modestly. Check the weather. Wear comfortable shoes. Travel light. You might want to bring a small backpack with a water bottle, an extra layer, and room for goodies and gifts. Wandering yields loot.
How will we find the group at the rally point?
Aim to arrive 5-10 minutes early. You'll get specific booking instructions and a contact phone number after booking. If you don't find the group when you arrive, you can be confidant that the guide will find you.
