Changing Our Mental Maps

Norman Farb speaking to Hidden Brain.

In this episode of the Hidden Brain, Neuroscientist Norman Farb explains how our brains navigate by creating mental maps.

He discusses what has come to be known as the default mode network, which is a large-scale brain network that is active when we are focused internally (like when you realize you've just driven 40 miles without thinking about it).

The default mode network is a form of autopilot that saves us a ton of time and energy, but the dark side is that if we use it too much, we don't update our maps regularly, and we can get dangerously out of sync.

Farb doesn't talk about wandering explicitly, but he still makes an excellent case for why wandering is so important. It updates the maps.
